The remains of a mother aged 34 and her 10-year-old daughter have been discovered inside freezers in an apartment in the western part of Austria.

The deceased, a Syrian woman and her child, who had been missing for a number of months, were uncovered on the end of last week. The cooling units were concealed behind a plasterboard wall in the apartment, situated in the city of Innsbruck.

Two individuals, a 55-year-old Austrian and his brother aged 53, were taken into custody in June. The older man, a colleague of the female victim, told law enforcement last week that there had been an accident—but disputed murder.

Speaking to journalists recently, a spokesman for the legal authorities announced the brothers were being held on "serious suspicion of intentional killing".

Personal details of those implicated have been withheld by authorities, in following local legislation.

Their going missing was originally brought to light by the female victim's relative, who lives in Germany, on 25 July 2024.

Police stated the woman's colleague told them at the time she had embarked on an extended trip with her child to visit her parents in the nation of Turkey.

The mother's debit card was then discovered to be utilized abroad several times.

But when police searched the victim's residence, her smartphone was located.

Someone also reported hearing a commotion in the dwelling, and shouts of "mother" on the occasion the pair were believed to have vanished.

A wider police investigation was launched, with officers discovering various messages transmitted via the mother's device—such as a resignation letter to her workplace and communications to the male colleague.

Authorities said a significant cash transfer was also sent to the man.

The head of the State Criminal Police Office stated to reporters on that day that a rented space had been leased before the victims' disappearance and a freezing appliance had been installed within.

The brothers took out the cooling unit from the facility on the date the victims disappeared, Tersch stated. And a seven days after, they purchased a second unit.

Investigators state they believe this suggests the demise were intentionally orchestrated.

"How they died could not be determined due to the condition of the victims," she commented.

Mayr—of the public prosecutor's office—noted the specific order of occurrences is yet to be determined, but the bodies were professionally hidden and were not found during a prior examination.

While the suspects were arrested in June, it was only on November 12 that the 55-year-old acknowledged an event and to concealing the remains. He denies any intent to kill, investigators said.

Meanwhile, his 53-year-old sibling confessed to a cover-up but rejected knowledge of a murder.

The pair are at this time in custody awaiting trial in prisons in Innsbruck and Salzburg, approximately 189 kilometers away from each other.

In a joint statement, Austria's Minister for Women and Justice Minister declared the "reported homicide of mother and child... symbolizes the abrupt and violent termination of two human lives and exposes a cruel system".

"Female individuals are being murdered due to the mere fact that they are female," they added.

"Femicides are a strongly established and society-wide problem that we must address decisively."
