The co-founders behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has announced that parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the launch for a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.

Ben Cohen, that co-founded the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, revealed that he will independently develop the controversial flavor within an individual series highlighting causes the company has been barred from addressing publicly.

Ongoing Dispute Involving Founders and Corporate Owner

The recent announcement escalates the continuing conflict among the world-famous dessert company and its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods corporation that has owned Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.

The co-founders have asserted that the parent company along with their ice cream division Magnum unlawfully blocked their company against "honouring its social mission".

Watermelon Flavor becoming a Symbol of Solidarity

The entrepreneur revealed via an Instagram video that he's developing an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas regarding the product's name plus potential ingredients.

“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen stated from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire in Palestine while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”

The watermelon has emerged as an emblem of solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its colors, which closely resemble the colors in the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.

Historical Social Engagement and Current Changes

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in territories occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever selling the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales in the occupied West Bank.

This upcoming product line is being created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand that originally established in 2016 for endorsing ex- political contender Bernie Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".

Management Shifts and Future Intentions

Mr. Cohen stated how he will develop other ice cream flavors that address issues that Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly by Unilever.

This development follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at the company recently, after many years of involvement, mentioning worries regarding how its independence was compromised after Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.

Previously, Ben Cohen stated that "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."

“My conscience compels me to continue to work inside the company to fight for its independence so that it can achieve its ethical purpose, the principles which it was founded on while upholding for decades," he explained to media outlets.
