The Former French President Set to Write Prison Memoir Documenting Three Weeks Behind Bars

The ex-president of France plans a personal account this autumn named Diary of a Prisoner, detailing his experience served in jail.

The announcement came less than two weeks following Sarkozy was released as his appeal proceeds the guilty verdict related to illegal collaboration in a case to acquire presidential race money linked to the leadership of Muammar Gaddafi.

Time in Custody: Personal Reflections

“In prison one sees little, and activities are scarce,” he notes in an extract, indicating the book centers around his thoughts during solitary confinement rather than a broader observation on the strained and crisis-hit correctional facilities in the country.

“Quiet is absent, which is missing in La Santé, where one hears a lot to hear,” he adds. “The racket persists relentlessly. Yet, similar to barren lands, personal reflection is strengthened while incarcerated.”

Court Appearance: Sharing the Struggle

At his release request hearing, the former leader had appeared by video link from inside the facility, characterizing his incarceration as exhausting. He expressed in court: “I want to pay tribute the correctional officers, displaying remarkable compassion, and who have made this nightmare manageable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“It never crossed my mind that in my seventies, I would end up incarcerated. It’s a trial forced upon me. I confess it’s hard, it’s very hard. It affects one all who experience it due to its intensity.”

First of Its Kind

He, the ex-head of state for a five-year term, became the inaugural ex-leader from the EU and the first postwar leader in the French Republic to experience jail.

Ahead of his incarceration he mentioned he intended to spend the period to write a book.

Books in Prison

It remains unclear did he manage to read and critique the volumes he took into prison: a two-volume biography of Jesus plus the novel by Dumas the famous story, a plot where a wrongfully accused individual is imprisoned later flees to take revenge.

Daily Reality

The former leader remained in solitary confinement due to safety concerns in a room approximately nine square meters including private facilities in the Paris jail located in the capital. Two bodyguards occupied a neighbouring cell.

Reports indicated that he consumed just yogurt in prison worried that meals provided could have been tampered with. Options were available for self-catering yet he declined, based on unnamed sources. Not known is if the memoir includes meals during incarceration.

Lawyer’s Statements

Sarkozy’s lawyer, Christophe Ingrain every day throughout the jail term, informed the court he would be safer out of prison rather than in custody. “He received threats against his life, heard shouts after dark plus rapid actions in a neighbouring cell when a prisoner self-harmed.”

Case Background

Sarkozy went to prison last month when a French court sentenced him to a five-year sentence for illegal collaboration in connection with efforts to obtain political donations for his 2007 presidential race.

He denies wrongdoing and is contesting the ruling, and another court case is scheduled for the coming spring.
