New York Introduces Online Platform for Residents to Share ICE Videos Following Detentions of Four American Citizens

New York state attorney general has rolled out a recent online portal urging residents to provide images and footage of ICE operations throughout New York. This action follows a shortly after a high-profile immigration operation disrupted NYC's Chinatown, prompting mass outcry.

American Citizens Detained During ICE Operation

A lawmaker revealed during a midweek briefing that four American citizens were taken into custody and held for "nearly 24 hours" after Tuesday's raid. Rallies occurred in the city on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

"Each citizen deserves to exist without intimidation," state officials declared in a statement.

"If you witnessed and captured ICE activity during the raid, I ask you to provide that material with my office. We are pledged to assessing these accounts and investigating any violations of law."

Portal Features

The form offers spaces to upload visual evidence of the operation, as well as a field to indicate where it occurred. Before submitting, individuals must check a box that states that "the attorney general may use any documents, photographs, or videos in a official report, including in a court case or official statement."

Information about the Chinatown Raid

The Manhattan operation, which observers say featured over fifty government officers, took place in a popular neighborhood of the city where imitation products and merchandise are regularly available in large quantities – typically to tourists.

Recordings of Tuesday's raid reveal numerous covered and weaponized personnel securing and holding a man, and forcing aside onlookers. Throngs of residents trailed the personnel along the roads. An armored military vehicle was observed moving along the urban roads.

Leadership Statements

At a Wednesday press conference featuring the rights organization, the congressman, a Democrat, announced that four US citizens were arrested by immigration for about 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where nationals should be arrested for no reason." He clarified the persons were released on Wednesday with no charges filed.

"The intent is obvious here. It is not to take criminals off the street," the congressman said. "This constitutes a military-style operation to create conflict. It is merely a excuse to generate turmoil for federal officials to deploy the military to stop unrest that they have created."

Extensive Outcry

Outrage over the federal action escalated – every NYC mayor hopefuls condemned the incident, including the state leader.

"Repeatedly, the current administration chooses oppressive displays that generate terror, instead of protection. It needs to cease," a political candidate wrote.

New York City advocacy organizations spoke out too.

"ICE targeted Chinatown in NYC with military-style vehicles, masked agents and tactical gear to focus on small merchants attempting to earn income. This operation had no relation to citizen protection and was entirely about terrorizing immigrant families and communities," said the head of a major immigrant coalition.

ICE Policies

Agency rules bans the arrest of American nationals and the bureau has stated it will not take into custody citizens. However, investigative journalism has discovered that more than 170 American nationals have been detained unlawfully by federal agents since the beginning of the current administration.

Ongoing Trend

Immigration operations have been becoming more common in New York and across the US this year.

A mid-October raid in central NYC was the first known raid on an immigrant shelter of the existing leadership. Demonstrations opposing federal operations are ubiquitous including accusations of force and abusive practices.

Recently, a document filed by civil rights groups stated healthcare failures of pregnant women in ICE facilities.
