New Year Celebrants Told to Dress Warmly with Wintry Weather Forecast Throughout the UK

Forecasters are saying an icy commencement to the new year, with snow anticipated over large parts of the UK. Those celebrating have been told to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Events Proceed Despite Warnings

The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay events are planned to proceed, following last year's calling-off. This comes despite weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so extra layers will be necessary," stated the weather service.

Displays Under Clear but Cold Skies

In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks shows, with dry conditions and clear skies. Temperatures are forecast to be chilly, meaning additional clothing vital, as per forecasters.

To the north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Widespread Weather Alerts for Friday

As we enter Friday, snow alerts are active across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

• Disruptions and cancellations are likely on public transport.

Temperatures Expected to Fall Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are set to fall even more as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Health Advisories Released

In addition, amber-level health advisories are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency stated this meant the weather could to trigger significant impacts across medical and care provision. This encompasses a potential rise in the number of deaths among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.
