Early Saturday, reports emerged of major blasts rocking Tehran, following statements from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preventative strike.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were audible in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of dense smoke were seen billowing over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet reported, though it did not immediately offer additional information.
Context: Rising Strains and Prior Developments
The incident occurs against a backdrop of sharply increased tensions in the region. Major developments preceding this attack involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant build-up of American warships in the Middle East, featuring the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent discussions between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with indications of more talks scheduled.
- Public Statements: Before the strike, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued threats regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or confront severe consequences.
Iranian Response
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had accused the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. Officials dismissed assertions about missile development and casualty figures as unfounded.
These developments remains fast-moving, with additional reports expected as the situation develops.
