Israelis have gathered throughout the country to mark two years since the Hamas-led offensive on 7 October 2023, as talks advanced in Egypt over a resolution to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The assault led to over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel answered by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are considered reliable by the UN and other global organizations.
"Our violent enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on that day.
He also vowed to "realize all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will no longer present a risk to Israel".
The national leadership delayed formal memorials until mid-October - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still were held throughout the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the relatives of people who died in the Hamas attack was organized in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the affected families, it was televised on Israeli television channels.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was respected around the country.
At the same time, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams convened in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to examine the conditions of the agreement.
A prominent Palestinian official involved in the discussions said that an late session of indirect talks commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The source explained the day's discussions ended without tangible results, due to conflicting views over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not resume fighting after the opening period of the arrangement.
He commented that the discussions are "tough and have not yet produce any major advancement," but mentioned that facilitators are working hard to close the differences between the both parties.
In the city's memorial area earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling survived the attack on the outdoor event, where hundreds were killed and many more were abducted by Hamas fighters - told: "Nowhere feels like home now and until all the hostages return no one will have peace of mind."
"Once we see everybody home once more, we can feel relief once more. Then we can start to rebuild," she continued.
Near the prime minister's residence in Jerusalem, people assembled to express their backing for the relatives of the captives. Israel states nearly fifty continue in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be living.
Activist Atalia Regev explained: "It's necessary do every compromise needed for the captives to come back home. But we really want assurances that we will be protected."
Research now regularly indicate that around the majority of Israeli citizens desire the hostilities to conclude in return for the release of the hostages.
At the area of the gathering, mourners came together to honor the dead.
From that location, the sound of military attacks and explosions could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers indicated the severe Israeli bombardment continued.
In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were noted in the morning of that day in the western Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern area of the community, as well the settlement to the northwest.
"When the dusk falls, the fear comes with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli bombing previously, explained.
"My family are terrified of the attacks. During nighttime we are lying together, holding each other, particularly my smallest child who places his face on me all night."
"Constantly we look at the updates to see the situation. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the war will resume to us."
The medical facility in the urban area said it had accepted the corpses of six people by the daytime, including a trio killed in an Israeli attack in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Another medical facility in the southern urban center of Khan Younis reported another two dead people had been delivered. One of them was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while looking for aid to the southern area, medics reported.
