Initial This Year's Deportation Charter Cancelled As Part of UK's Controversial Migration Scheme

The first scheduled deportation charter of 2026, designed to send back asylum seekers who came in the UK via small boats has been called off, according to reports.

Detainees earmarked for the UK's reciprocal returns scheme and who held boarding passes for a midweek departure were informed that their journey had been cancelled.

"I arrived on a vessel with approximately eighty individuals aboard," said one person whose removal was cancelled. "A group of ten of us were detained, while seventy others were accommodated to have their claims processed here. That isn't fair. I was relieved when our tickets were cancelled, but the guards would not tell us a reason. When I asked, they simply said, 'we can't tell you why.'"

A First Cancellation for the Policy

This marks the first instance a 'one in, one out' removal charter flight has been cancelled, though it is not believed to be a result of legal action.

Inmate Account Circulated Prior to Cancellation

The charter's cancellation comes after the release of a document on Monday, compiled by eighty individuals held in an immigration removal centre near Heathrow airport.

The account highlights concerns that while the majority of those who arrive on dinghies are having their asylum claims considered within the UK, a smaller group has been detained and issued with removal directions. The men are said to view their confinement as "unjust and discriminatory."

The report adds: "We are not criminals. We are individuals who fled war, oppression, and injustice. We traveled to the UK believing in fundamental freedoms, freedom, and safety. In contrast, we are confined, separated, and silenced."

Financial Repercussions of Flight Scrapping

When a removal flight is cancelled at the last minute, the government may face compensation payments totaling tens of thousands of pounds to the plane leasing company. The exact contract terms for UK to France removal flights are unclear.

Based on sources involved in such deportations, the average cost for a single deportation charter is around £250,000.

Previous data published for 2022 indicated the average cost was about £180,000, with prices fluctuating based on the type of aircraft, destination, and other considerations.
