Gianni Infantino has opened the door to more tournaments held in winter and global club championships, asserting that the sport should remain open to new ideas about moving big events out of the summer months.
Conversations are ongoing about the schedule beyond 2030, a key area of concern given the increased squeeze from enlarged events. The global body established a task force to study the matter, while the international organization has created a challenge by awarding the 2034 World Cup to Saudi Arabia. The event will likely be organized in colder seasons, following the Qatar model. The president proposed soccer must become accustomed to separating from Europe's summer period.
“We're thoroughly examining specifics, ongoing conversations are happening,” he remarked. “The discussion extends beyond one event, it involves wider thinking. Even when playing in parts of Europe during July temperatures are extreme.”
These remarks came on the sidelines of the EFC general assembly in Rome. Similar opinions were voiced to numerous participants, remarking: “We should look into the globalisation of the worldwide football schedule.” He cited October and March as “times when worldwide competition is feasible.”
Such a drastic reconfiguration would cause ructions, although FIFA's ability to carry out its plans might face obstacles if a formal complaint against its imposition of the calendar, filed to the European Commission earlier by football leagues, triggers legal processes.
The governing body is considering approaches to grow the international club championship. A larger tournament setup could be implemented next time, with the potential for preliminary qualification matches that reduces the total count to thirty-two participants. Infantino mentioned ambitious plans in his Italian address, indicating they would “endeavor to find ways we can make this event bigger, more successful, more significant.”
Spain and Morocco are favorites to host the 2029 event, set to happen in the summer, although other contenders are being considered. A quick comeback to America might be considered and reports indicate the Asian nation, previously arranged to stage the event in 2021 until Covid-19 hit, still wants to host.
Officials are thinking about staging the international tournament once every two years following 2029. Qatar is the strong frontrunner to stage the 2031 tournament, a move that would be simpler to implement if the suggested adjustments is achieved given a winter scheduling would become necessary.
The president stated any long-term move towards staging domestic league games in foreign countries would be a major gamble. Recent developments saw authorization provided for matches in the US and Australia, emphasising this was granted as a special case. The governing body's approval is a formality, yet Infantino seemed to imply the prospect did not sit easily.
“There exists a framework featuring matches within countries, across continents and global level,” he elaborated. “This framework that made football the No 1 sport worldwide. Should we dismantle this structure, we endanger everything.”
As part of other changes at the EFC general assembly, included the verification of the Spanish team's reinstatement to the fold, which was anticipated by Barcelona's leader participating at the gala meal. The club had left the association after the abortive Super League project in 2021, which they promoted together with European giants.
The organization's leader the football executive humorously noted the renewed partnership became formal during a “romantic walk”. Their readmission appears to pour further cold water on any revival of the controversial competition plan.
