Gavin Newsom Confirms He Is Considering a Presidential Campaign for 2028

Gavin Newsom, a well-known Democratic figure, has disclosed that he intends to make a decision about whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 once the 2026 congressional elections are over.

"Yeah, I would be lying if I said no," the governor remarked when questioned about seriously considering a White House bid after the 2026 elections. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I can't do that."

The governor's current term as California's leader concludes in early 2027, and term limits prevent another run. However, he emphasized that any decision is still years away.

"It's up to destiny," he said.

Increased Visibility as a Political Adversary

He has stepped forward as a notable critic of the Trump administration, employing his online platforms and championing a proposition that would increase the party's congressional seats in as a counter to redistricting by Republicans. This move has invited attacks from critics.

Clash on Transportation

Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor shows no concern about the state's residents in a weekend segment on a major news network. Duffy disclosed intentions to cut taxpayer dollars from the state and suggested eliminating the state's ability to grant trucking licenses.

"I intend to cut a significant sum from California," he declared, following a recently reported fatal crash in the state involving an undocumented trucker that caused fatalities and casualties.

His administration pointed out that the federal government had renewed the worker's status multiple times, which permitted him to secure a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.

The transportation secretary had earlier stated he was holding back $40m from California for ignoring English language requirements for commercial drivers.

Strong Response from the Administration

"Ex-reality TV personality, now transportation chief, still doesn't understand U.S. regulations," Newsom's office retorted in a previous statement countering Duffy's threats. "For now, in contrast to this person, we focus on reality: California CDL holders had a accident mortality rate nearly 40% lower than the national average. Texas – the single state with more commercial holders – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Statistics are clear. The federal leadership misleads."

Public Opinion and Political Future

A recent poll found that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and a significant portion of the electorate said that the governor must consider running for the White House in 2028. In recent years, his approval ratings has grown to an mean of about one-third from around 30%, while his negative ratings has fallen from an typical level of more than 40% to 38.4%.

In previous months, the governor remarked while traveling several battleground states that he had "no clue" about his intentions for the next presidential election.

He mentioned his personal struggles, including being found to have a learning disability at the age of five.

"The thought that a person who scored 960 on the SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was often seated at the back – the idea that you would even throw that out is, in and of itself, extraordinary," he commented. "It's anyone's guess? I'm looking forward to who steps forward in the next election and who answers the call. And that is the issue for the American people."
