Felicity Cloake's Quick-Fire Party Plan: Effortless Entertaining for Spontaneous Guests

Throughout the busy period, when there is plenty going on that even vivacious individuals might sometimes anticipate a quiet break of January, it is very easy to overlook details. I believe I cannot be the only person who's once been startled back to reality at my desk by an inquiry from someone wondering, "What time do you want us later?" Don't worry; whether you are forgetful, and simply inclined toward impromptu invitations, I've got some solutions.

The Key to Great Get-Togethers

Firstly, though I can't stress this sufficiently, if you have planned long in advance or only 15 minutes, the most enjoyable parties tend to be the simplest. All everyone really wants are pleasant conversation, something to sip, plus enough to eat that they don't feel like gnawing something on the ride back. Unless you're throwing a lavish ball, nobody anticipates professional bartending, Michelin-starred catering or a live band.

The most successful gatherings tend to be the easiest. However, a concept helps to disguise the fact you've only put the party on on the way after a long day.

Selecting a Theme to Focus Your Preparations

That said, a theme works well to hide the fact you have only put this thing together while returning from the office. By concept, I mean such as the holidays. Going a bit focused (Swedish-style festivities, say, featuring spiced drink, spiced punch, fish snacks and crispbreads, Nordic beats playlist; or Mexican Christmas, including holiday punch, chilled brews or tequila drinks, along with lots of tortilla chips, salsa and green spread, with Luis Miguel in the background) can narrow your choices during the inevitable grocery run.

Practical Shopping to Support The Gathering

In the store, select one or two beverages (one alcoholic for drinkers, one not for others prefer not to) plus some snacks suited to the style, then get as much of them as you can afford, instead of worrying about giving people too much choice. Nothing looks as generous and as festive than abundance – I'd always rather to arrive by a sink filled with iced containers of reasonably priced sparkling wine over one glass with expensive champagne. (Include several packs of cubes, as well; you'll find never sufficient ice.)

Beverages & Punch Simplified

If you must show off and provide a mixed drink, make sure to pre-mix a large batch in a jug so that you aren't stuck messing about with preparation when you should be having fun. After starting, enlist a partner or volunteer to watch the drinks then top up as necessary till it runs out. Follow suit with the soft drink; guests love to be given a role at a party so they may share in the positive vibes.

On the punch front, whichever recipe you choose (you can find plenty via search), steer clear of anything too sweet – children there need their own drinks – and if you have one, put aromatic bitters nearby (don't add them in the mix since they're not suitable for people who do not consume alcohol altogether). Make an effort in presenting it so the alcohol-free drink doesn't feel unimportant; just spend a minute to cut several pieces of fruit to the punch.

Nibbles That Work With Minimal Effort

In my view, I'd skip the readymade trays with "party foods" available at grocery stores seasonally; they seem overly complicated, and frequently involve turning the oven on (if you choose to go this route, know that all guests secretly favors herb bread and/or small hot dogs anyway). I'm convinced it's hard to top several really big bowls of good-quality crisps (salted pleases everyone), plus, assuming no allergies, some of those big and excellent value bags of mixed nuts typically found with global foods of supermarkets, with perhaps a few ready-to-eat olives for colour (it's best to avoid to discover stones around the house months later).

If, similar to some, you don't consider chips substantial fare, one sizeable chunk of tasty cheese on a board with crackers and some elegantly arranged grapes tends to seem artistic. A platter with some cured or cooked salami or salmon displayed on it (only one type, unless you're wealthy), alternatively a nice pre-made pie, similar to that appear on deli counters during festivities, proves more substantial, while you really can't go wrong by serving artisanal slices of flatbread, because they require no spreading butter.
