This Academy Award-nominated actor the celebrated Diane Ladd has died at the age of 89.
This star, whose roles included Chinatown, passed away at home in California’s Ojai. The news was shared through a message by her daughter, award-winning actress Laura Dern.
Laura Dern, who performed alongside Diane Ladd in several movies like Wild at Heart, referred to her as “my incredible hero and my special gift being my mom”, stating that she was present when she passed.
“She was the greatest daughter, mother, grandmother, star, artist along with caring individual that only dreams could have seemingly created,” she wrote. “We were blessed to have her. She is now with the angels.”
Ladd’s early career featured minor parts on television series including Perry Mason whereas the seventies had her appearing next to actor Jack Nicholson in the film Chinatown.
That very year, 1974, she performed alongside Ellen Burstyn in Scorsese’s praised dramatic comedy Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. The performance earned Ladd her initial Oscar nod as best supporting actress.
In the 1980s, she appeared in the dramatic film the movie Black Widow and humorous film National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and appeared on the show Alice, a television series inspired by Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.
In the subsequent decade, she was given a further Oscar nomination for supporting actress Oscar nomination for her performance in David Lynch’s Wild at Heart where she played the parent of her real-life daughter Laura Dern’s role. The following year she obtained an additional nod for her acting in the film Rambling Rose which included Laura Dern.
“This was the picture which Princess Diana picked as her top choice, and she invited us to England for a special screening and a celebration for us,” Ladd recalled regarding Rambling Rose. “She sat with us, holding both our hands, with tears, watching us perform.”
That decade featured performances in humorous films Cemetery Club, a film joining her again with Burstyn, Primary Colors, a political story, a political comedy, featuring John Travolta and Payne’s the movie Citizen Ruth where she played Dern’s mother again. Those years also earned her nominations for Emmy Awards for work on Dr Quinn, the show Grace Under Fire and Touched by an Angel.
She persisted in performing with Laura Dern in films blending humor and drama Daddy and Them, the David Lynch project Inland Empire, a surreal film and Mike White’s dark comedy series the program Enlightened. She was also seen next to Sandra Bullock in 28 Days, a movie, Anthony Hopkins in The World’s Fastest Indian, a film and with Jennifer Lawrence in the film Joy.
Her more recent television parts included the series Ray Donovan and Young Sheldon, a comedy.
She also authored and directed the comedy film Mrs Munck, a film which starred her and previous spouse actor Bruce Dern. “Bruce is a talented star,” she noted. “I’m privileged to have directed him on a project. Actually, I stand as the only woman in history to direct her ex-husband. I make a joke: ‘I advise females, if you seek payback, guide your former spouse.’ But I’m only kidding.”
She was additionally a family member of the great Tennessee Williams, who she referred to as “a major inspiration throughout my life”.
During 2018, Ladd was misdiagnosed with a pulmonary condition and advised her life expectancy was six months but made a full recovery when her daughter transferred her to a different hospital.
“If you can take your pain and prevent it from festering like a sore or something, instead use it to investigate, to clarify the journey for yourself and others, then you are triumphing,” Ladd remarked.
