Democratic officials demonstrated anger after the ex-president accused a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and stated they should be taken into custody and sentenced "with execution" following their posting of a controversial video.
The clip, shared on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic elected officials who formerly worked in military or defense roles.
"Similar to us, you all swore an oath to protect and defend this national charter," the lawmakers stated in the short video. "And right now, the risks to our constitution aren't just from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our regulations are unambiguous, you can decline unlawful commands, you can decline unlawful commands, you should decline unlawful commands. No one has to carry out directives that violate the law or our national charter."
The clip appeared to trigger a angry response from the former president.
On later in the week, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional post, he wrote: "This represents really serious, and Dangerous to our Country. Their statements cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent post, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Following Trump's comments on that day, Top Democrats published a joint declaration denouncing the remarks.
"Violent politics has no role in this nation," they stated. "Representatives who were featured in the video all acted our nation with exceptional national pride and distinction. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous threats of violence against congressional representatives, and appeal to GOP representatives to vigorously do the same."
The opposition officials also stated that they had been in contact with security officials "to ensure the security of these representatives and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must right away delete these extreme online messages and retract his violent discourse before he causes harm," the statement continued.
The officials who participated in the video also issued a statement.
"We serve as veterans and defense specialists who value this country and swore an pledge to safeguard and uphold the national charter of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we intend to maintain it. No threat, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that sacred obligation."
"The significant point is that the former president views it liable to punishment by death for us to reiterate the law," they added. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their support as they carry out their pledge to the national charter and responsibility to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."
They stated: "All citizens must join forces and censure the ex-president's calls for our execution and partisan aggression. This is a period for ethical certainty."
The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's statements and posted on social media: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the execution of public representatives."
He added: "This is an clear THREAT. Every Senator, every Representative, the entire nation – regardless of party – should censure this right away and absolutely."
The Republican House speaker defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have prominent officials of Congress instructing soldiers to disobey orders, I think that is historic in US history."
The Conservative representative also according to sources informed media outlets that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the violation of rebellion" but that "lawyers have to parse the language and decide all that."
During a White House press conference on that day, when questioned by a journalist, "Is the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the White House press secretary responded: "Certainly not."
"Let's be clear about what the president is responding to," the official said. "You have sitting members of the US Congress who coordinated to orchestrate a recorded statement to personnel of the US military, to serving soldiers advising them to defy the commander in chief's proper directives."
She added: "The integrity of our defense system relies on the hierarchy, and if that structure is broken, it can lead to people getting killed, it can result in disorder, and that's what these congressional representatives ... are essentially encouraging."
