Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Group

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of characters, and a gripping narrative featuring divine entities, evil spirits, and sinister influences growing in strength within the city.

Warning: Spoilers for the latest installment of the new season lie ahead.

The Warrior Group Revealed

The third episode finished on a huge suspense moment and introduced the initial group of adventurers who will split off from the main group to embark on their separate journey, separate from the other two tables.

This warrior group consists of Teor Pridesire (brought to life by Travis Willingham), the agile character (Laura), Tyranny (the cast member), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan (Robbie Daymond).

Why Split the Party?

With an extensive roster, it was clear from the beginning that maintaining everyone at the same party would be unworkable.

Hence, the opening chapters of this story serve as an Introduction, weaving together the personal journeys before splitting into three smaller tables: Fighters, Schemers, and Questers.

The Nature of the Combat Party

As described by Brennan Lee Mulligan, the warrior group is for adventurers who are drawn to a classically intense battle-oriented narrative style where peaceful solutions are scarce.

At first glance, characters like the squeamish cleric the cleric might look out of place, but the events of the third episode show why these particular heroes are ideally matched for the Soldiers table.

Reasons to Leave

First, the group understands precisely where to head next after a brutal initial meeting with The Crow Keepers.

Casimir of Thjazi Fang—whose demise started the narrative’s action—used the enemy for his own means, entering Thjazi’s hideout, assaulting Thimble, and taking all the magical artifacts to sell off.

Casimir then cleared his liabilities and fled to a fortified location in the remote area, above the urban center, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.

Personal Motivations

Additionally, each adventurer has a individual motive to depart the urban setting:

  • Thimble, as the companion and best friend, wants vengeance.
  • The knowledgeable figure knows the northern area and cautions that it is a hostile location.
  • Tyranny and The cleric, having disobeyed his family’s wishes to eliminate the target and instead rescued him, have no other options.
  • Yet, their status as key figures in the powerful family could help the team enter locations they usually can’t.
  • Moreover, The grateful character vowed a life debt to Wicander for his rescue and will now go with him wherever.

Wanted and Hunted

Lastly, all of them are hunted by the authorities that govern the setting for a variety of reasons, making staying in the city no longer safe:

  • The agile adventurer and Kattigan are known criminals.
  • The warrior and Wicander defied the powerful family and the army of fiends they are aligned with.
  • The fighter is wanted dead by the family.

This results in them little choice but to head to the remote area in search of the traitor.

Upcoming Developments

According to episode three’s Cooldown, we find out that the Soldiers table will be absent next week, leaving the remaining eight participants to assemble the Explorers and Strategists tables.

Audiences can look forward to finding out which players will be in which group in the season’s concluding setup installment, streaming live on next week.
