Colombia's President Warns 'I Would Resort to Weapons Again' if US Invades.

The US President along with President Gustavo Petro have turned up the tone of their war of words, increasing strains in their relations after US forces targeted Venezuela to remove President Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He operates cocaine mills and processing labs and his time is running out," the US president stated.

Rising Rhetoric coupled with Allegations

Talking to reporters on Sunday, the American leader suggested comparable use of force against Bogotá, stating the nation faces serious problems and led by a sick man who likes making cocaine and trafficking it to the US."

Although Colombia stands as the world’s largest cocaine-producing country, authorities have found no indication implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is in any way connected to the business.

A Strained Partnership

The country has long been a staunch collaborator of the United States in the campaign against narcotics trade and benefited from bipartisan support from American politicians, however, the relationship have deteriorated significantly after Trump assumed the presidency.

Colombia’s narcotics trade is mainly overseen by guerrilla factions like the Clan del Golfo, another leftist insurgency and breakaway groups of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), the majority of whose members disbanded following a landmark accord.

The President's Defiant Response

In response to a query if armed intervention like that in Venezuela was a possibility for Colombia, Trump responded: "That seems like a good idea to me personally."

Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who disarmed decades ago, categorically refuted Trump's claims. "I am not illegitimate and I am not a narco," he declared.

"The US president speaks without knowledge. Stop slandering me," he posted online.

"If US bombs target civilians, they will turn into numerous insurgents across the countryside. And if they detain the nation's leader, whom a large part of Colombians loves and respects, they will unleash the powerful force of the nation," he admonished.

From Fighter to President

The president dedicated part of his youth participating of the leftist M-19 insurgent movement although reports indicate to have ever participated in combat. Upon leaving the group, he participated in writing the constitutional rewrite in 1991 and later became a prominent senator. He was mayor of Bogotá before being elected president.

"I swore to abstain from using arms again ... but for Colombia I would take up arms again," he affirmed.

Increased Security and Widespread Opposition

Minister Pedro Sánchez reported that the national leader's protection team had received additional support.

Many among Colombia’s conservative opposition have expressed support with Trump, however, leaders spanning Colombian politics have rejected the threats of American military action targeting Colombia.

Political and Financial Sanctions

American authorities revoked his travel authorization following he urged US troops to ignore orders that violate law. Months later, the US enacted financial sanctions on Petro, his wife and several close collaborators.

Concurrently as the US increased its troop levels near Venezuela and targeting vessels thought to carry drugs against Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets executed strikes against vessels in Pacific waters adjacent to Colombia.
