A Chinese judicial body has handed down death sentences to a group of top figures of an infamous Myanmar mafia to death as Beijing maintains its crackdown on fraudulent activities in the region.
In all, 21 Bai family figures and partners were sentenced of scams, murder, assault and other offenses, reported a state media report published on the judicial portal.
The group is one of a few of organized crime groups that rose to power in the 2000s and transformed the poor isolated region of the town into a wealthy base of gambling establishments and nightlife areas.
Recently they turned to fraudulent schemes in which thousands of trafficked individuals, a large number of them from China, are ensnared, harmed and obligated to defraud victims in criminal enterprises worth huge sums.
Syndicate head Bai Suocheng and his son the younger Bai were included in the group of individuals sentenced to execution by the judicial body. Yang Liqiang, A third figure and Chen Guangyi were the remaining sentenced.
Two members of the clan mafia were handed suspended death sentences. Five were condemned to life imprisonment, while more figures were given jail terms between several years to two decades.
This family, who controlled their own private army, set up forty-one bases to accommodate their digital scam activities and casinos, officials stated.
These illegal enterprises involved exceeding 29 billion Chinese yuan ($4.1 billion; over three billion pounds). They also resulted in the demise of several from China citizens, the self-inflicted death of an individual and multiple harm, reports reported.
The severe punishments delivered by the judicial body are within China's initiative to eliminate the large fraud networks in the region - and issue a strong warning to further criminal groups.
Such groups gained influence in the recent decades with the help of Min Aung Hlaing - who now leads Myanmar's regime. He had wanted to bolster allies in the town after removing its earlier warlord.
Within the clans, the Bais were "the top", the son before stated to official sources.
During that period, we was the most powerful in both the government and armed circles," the individual said in a film about the clan, broadcast on Chinese state media in July.
In the same documentary, a worker at one of fraud facilities described the abuse he had endured there: besides being hit, he had his fingernails removed with instruments and two of his digits severed with a blade.
The son is included in those who were given to execution this week. He has also been separately found guilty of conspiring to smuggle and manufacture a large quantity of methamphetamine, state media reported.
The families' fall occurred in last year as political winds shifted.
Over a long period Beijing has pressed the Myanmar junta to rein in fraudulent activities in the area.
In 2023, the law enforcement announced detention orders for the most prominent members of such families.
Bai Suocheng, the Bai family's head, was among the figures who were extradited to China from the country in early 2024.
For what reason is the authorities putting such extensive work to pursue the four families?" a official commented in the summer film.
This serves as a warning individuals, regardless of your position, where you are, if you commit such serious acts targeting the citizens, you will face consequences."
