Australian Teen Faces Charges for Allegedly Placing Googly Eyes on ‘Blue Blob’ Artwork

The local council stated they could not take off the eyes without damaging the artwork.

A young person from Australia has faced legal proceedings after reportedly defacing a large blue sculpture of a mythical creature by affixing plastic eyes to it.

The 19-year-old, 19 years old, participated remotely at the local court in the state of South Australia on that day, charged with a single charge of damaging property.

In a statement at the time of the recent event, the municipal authorities explained that CCTV footage captured a individual putting fake eyes on the artwork, which locals have nicknamed the “Cast in Blue”.

The accused made no plea and informed the judge she was unwell, as reported by media sources, with the judge advising her to find a legal representative before her next court date in December.

Sculpture after eye removal
The affected sculpture following the stickers were taken off.

A day after the reported event, the city leader said that restoration to the much-loved public artwork would be expensive as the adhesive eyes could not be removed without damaging the sculpture.

“This wilful damage to a cherished community art is unacceptable and disrespectful,” City of Mount Gambier mayor remarked in September. “It is not harmless fun, it is pricey - it is also frustrating to those members of our society who have welcomed the Blue Blob.”

She said the council would seek the “substantial” restoration expenses from those responsible for the damage.

When the sculpture was first proposed, it drew varied responses from the local community due to its price tag and design.

Costing 136,000 Australian dollars (eighty-nine thousand US dollars; sixty-eight thousand pounds), the artwork depicts a mythical megafauna, with the sculpture’s designers influenced by an prehistoric marsupial ant-eater found in nearby caverns that was “huge, slow-moving, and intriguing”.

Official name vs. local name
Cast in Blue is its official name but residents called the piece the ‘Blue Blob’.
