A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national projects. They were built at an rapid pace, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
