The North London club has declared that its much-debated sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda will terminate in June of next year.
This deal, said to be worth around ÂŁ10 million annually, was first established and has since been heavily criticized.
This criticism is due to the country's reported backing for the M23 rebel group in ongoing conflicts in the eastern part of the bordering Congo.
Months ago, Arsenal was accused of issuing a severe rebuff to the Congolese government by declining to meet with Congolese diplomat Thérèse Wagner to address the sponsorship.
Visit Rwanda operates as an arm of the Rwanda Development Board, which is a state institution.
There is broad consensus that Arsenal committed to and continued this partnership mainly to grow their African supporter base.
Nevertheless, the arrangement has now concluded after both parties “mutually agreed” to part ways.
“Collaboratively, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have exceeded the initial objectives of the partnership – advocating preservation and responsible tourism, inspiring millions of supporters to explore Rwanda, and building a solid groundwork for tourism growth,” stated an official Arsenal statement.
The statement continued that the partnership has also aided Rwanda's objective to emerge as an global sports center in Africa and stage additional international competitions while delivering local football projects that have helped hundreds of young players and coaches develop their skills and inspire greater participation in athletics nationwide.
Richard Garlick, Arsenal's CEO, described the partnership as a “important voyage” and claimed it had been “driving forward” the club's ambitions.
Yet this view was contested by a portion of the Gunners' supporters, with the campaign group Arsenal Peace Advocates holding rallies outside the North London venue during the initial Champions League semi-final match against PSG in April's conclusion.
Activists unveiled a placard declaring “Drop Visit Rwanda” and distributed armbands to cover up the partnership emblem on jerseys.
In the same month, PSG extended their sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda for several more years.
Meanwhile, the Madrid-based team entered a new agreement for the identical duration that has resulted in the branding featured on the Spanish club's male and female kits.
