Arrangements for Putin-Trump Summit Postponed Days After Hungarian Capital Talks Announced

There are "no arrangements" for American leader President Trump to confer with Russia's Vladimir Putin "in the near term", a administration representative has declared.

Recently Trump stated he and the Russian president would meet in Budapest within two weeks to address the ongoing hostilities.

A planning session between America's top diplomat Secretary Rubio and his Russian counterpart Foreign Minister Lavrov was planned for recently - but the White House clarified the two had had a "productive" conversation and that a meeting was no longer "required".

The administration declined to provide further information on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.

Background Context

The US president had discussed a Budapest summit via telephone with Putin, a day before hosting Ukraine's President Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Certain accounts indicated his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with insiders suggesting Trump had urged him to relinquish extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Moscow.

However, on this week the American president embraced a truce plan endorsed by Ukraine and EU officials to halt the war on the current front line.

"Leave it as is the way it is," he said.

Moscow has frequently resisted against freezing the current line of contact.

Moscow was solely focused on "enduring stability", Lavrov commented on Tuesday, suggesting that freezing the front line would merely represent a short-term truce.

Diplomatic Positions

The "underlying reasons" of the conflict needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat said, using Kremlin shorthand for a range of comprehensive conditions that include the recognition of full Russian sovereignty over the Donbas as well as the demilitarisation of Ukraine – a unacceptable proposition for Ukraine and its EU supporters.

Zelensky commented discussions about the front line were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to prevent dialogue.

He also said the exclusive issue that could make Moscow "take notice" was that of the provision of long-range weapons to Ukraine.

Military Considerations

Putin's spontaneous discussion with Trump recently occurred before rumors that the US was preparing to send distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target Russian territory.

Zelensky asserted it was the weapons consideration that had forced Russia to participate in talks. The discussion regarding the missiles had emerged as a "significant input" in international relations", he added.
